Key Takeaways from VMworld 2017

The Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas was buzzing all week with activities surrounding VMworld 2017. Here are my takeaways on VMware’s many announcements:

VMware on Amazon Web Services: The big announcement was VMware’s GA release of cloud services for Amazon Web Services (AWS), both running on vSphere code on bare metal, and native services protecting and managing EC2 instances. The key thing to remember is AWS is just the start. This is the initial release and they will add on new features and functionality as they go. VMware's future aim is to add Azure and Google to this list as well, providing the same level of VMware service and functionality across all the major cloud vendors.

Is this (Finally) the Year of VDI? The Verdict is In

In last week’s blog "Is this (Finally) the Year of VDI?" I talked about how VDI has struggled to live up to its many promises and explained how security benefits and performance boosts from HyperConvergence are making VDI an attractive option to secure and support end users. Is wide scale adoption about to happen? Is 2017 finally the year of VDI? Read on to find out!

Is this (Finally) the Year of VDI?

It’s become an industry joke that every year is the “Year of VDI.” While promising to be the be-all and end-all solution to everyone’s IT woes, it’s never really lived up to the hype. Sometimes the issue is cost; other times it’s concerns about performance. And there’s also the problem of familiarity -- why break away from something you’re already comfortable with? Not to mention that supporting a VDI environment falls in that weird gray area between infrastructure and end user support. Nobody that has worked on VMware environments for the last 10 years is particularly interested in troubleshooting Microsoft Office issues again. But there is a convergence of improved technologies and market forces creating a perfect storm as to why you should begin seriously considering implementing VDI in your environment, if you haven’t done so already.

Keeping Up with Enterprise Vault Database Maintenance

I’ve come across many Enterprise Vault installations in the past 12 months that were suffering from degraded performance. The cause? Fragmentation of the SQL databases. Intuitively, we know that it is essential to perform regular database maintenance to preserve performance and protect data integrity while preventing data loss, but it doesn’t always get done. Without maintenance, stale SQL statistics and fragmentation within the indexes slow down deletion of completed threads which need to be returned to working memory.

AWS vs. Azure: Developers Share their Insights

When organizations are evaluating public cloud platforms, they frequently compare the market leaders: Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. There is no shortage of published content comparing the pros and cons of each of these platforms, but I think research by Stack Overflow, an online knowledge sharing community for developers, provides some interesting and unbiased insights.

Don’t Click that Link! Why Phishing Continues to Work

Cybercriminals continue to use phishing attacks on individuals within enterprises. With increased sophistication and multiple attack vectors, businesses must be vigilant at every step of the way to prevent infiltration. Let me share a recent example-

Today I received an email from a recruiter. It’s not out of the ordinary for recruiters to ping us with resumes hoping that we will see a fit for their candidate. This one was well written, had a company logo, and a picture of the sender. Including pictures is a growing trend with recruiters

Make Moving Backup to the Cloud Easy with NetBackup 8.0

More and more, the cloud is becoming a backup destination. Done right, using the cloud as a storage tier gives enterprises reliable and scalable data protection that unlocks agility, provides visibility and control over backups, and drives down costs.

Enterprise Cloud Data Protection

As we see our clients evaluating workloads to move to the cloud, backup is frequently on their list. In fact, ESG Research surveyed how organizations are leveraging cloud and found that data protection efforts (specifically backup, archiving, and disaster recovery) sit at the top of the cloud use-case list right now.

The Compelling Case for OneDrive

Initially driven by the consumer market, file sync & share solutions have been widely adopted over the last several years. Solutions like DropBox and Box have been continually enhancing their products to become enterprise grade. Microsoft is no exception with OneDrive. OneDrive has been a part of the Microsoft Office 365 suite for some time now and it’s gone through quite a few changes, most, if not all, have been for the better. That’s particularly true of the announcements Microsoft made on May 16, 2017 at their SharePoint Virtual Summit.
